“In the hospital car park, eleven year old Kevin McKendry tells his mum a joke to break the tension. His mum is upset and Kevin knows why. He overheard the doctor tell her that Kevin has a life expectancy of 30 years.
Back home Kevin tells his friend, Molly, what he’s overheard. While he’s quite matter-of-fact about it, Molly is much more concerned and her reaction makes Kevin consider the scary reality of death. Despite this he makes it clear that he’s going to hide what he knows from his mum.
Following a night of secretly Googling, ‘does it hurt to die?’ Kevin makes the mistake of leaving his laptop with his mum. She sees what he has been searching and confronts him. Kevin confesses that while he was afraid about what the doctor said, he was more concerned about the prospect of an emotional conversation with his mum. Together, they agree to talk.”
