The Laughing Boys

6m Experimental, Drama, Poetic 2025

Through the medium of spoken word, Mary recounts the joy of her childhood and reminisces on the pain of her loss.

Through the medium of spoken word, Mary recounts the joy of her childhood and reminisces on the pain of her loss, as she remembers the people who lost their lives to heroin and AIDS in St. Teresa’s Gardens with just one last block waiting to be demolished.

We hear the sounds of joy, 1970s inner-city Dublin as Mary stands alone in the centre of the now almost dilapidated flats.

We are brought on a journey as she recounts her childhood. We discover through her memories, the history, both good and bad of the people who lived, laughed and loved within its walls - as strong as the memory is of dealers and drug pushers in the area, stronger is the memory of joy, laughter and resilience before Mary moves into the new flats, where we learn of the preceding issues which impacted a generation.

The Laughing Boys is a celebration of these communities without denying the issues that impacted them.
