Over a century after Ireland has gained its independence, Ispíní na hEireann frontman Tomás Mulligan reflects on the cultural significance of the Cobblestone pub and traditional Irish music as a whole in a postcolonial society. He discusses the relevance of the music to current affairs including the housing crisis, arts funding and the far right’s stance on immigration.
A passion project that began as a college assignment now contains footage that spans over a five year period, including from the Octagon ruins in Wicklow, to several performances in the Cobblestone pub, protests to save the pub and their sold out gig in the Olympia theatre. The documentary follows Tomás as he and other musicians combat corporate greed through self expression, attempting to allow the Irish music scene to grow new legs with their unique and influential sound.
